  • GENERAL SUMMARY
  • Works under the supervision of the Manager of Respiratory Therapy. The Student Respiratory Therapist's primary job function is to provide high quality respiratory care delivery to the SOMC patient population in accordance with hospital policy. Performs other duties as assigned.
  • QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education:
  • High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required
  • Currently enrolled in a CAHEA-approved program in Respiratory Care required.
  • Licensure:
  • RCP(LTD) required
  • BLS/with re-certification every two years required.
  • BLS within 90 days of hire required
  • Experience:
  • Work and/or educational experience that promoted group/ team working relations is preferred.
  • Interpersonal Skills:
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with physicians, nurses and other allied health/hospital employees in stressful conditions. Demonstrate ability to communicate in verbal and written fashion, promoting a team approach to patient care.
  • Essential Technical/Motor Skills:
  • Must be able to skillfully operate a wide variety of respiratory care equipment in stressful conditions, and demonstrate clinical competence with patient care. Inputting of data/typing, calibration of equipment.
  • Essential Physical Requirements:
  • Frequent walking, frequent lifting of up to 25 lbs and occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs, standing for long periods of time.
  • Essential Mental Requirements:
  • Must be able to effectively work in a variety of stressful situations, conducting calculations, interpreting lab, testing values, special attention to detail and problem solving abilities.
  • Essential Sensory Requirements:
  • Must be able to effectively work in a variety of stressful situations, conducting calculations, interpreting lab, testing values, special attention to detail and problem solving abilities.
  • Exposure to Hazards:
  • Occasional exposure to bodily fluids (blood, sputum), cleaning agents, sharps, etc. Required to wear respirator equipment according to OSHA Standards.

  • JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

  • Delivers medical gas administration through various types of devices
  • Administers humidification, aerosols and aerosolized medications
  • Performs postural drainage and chest physical therapy
  • Delivers hyperinflation therapy (i.e., IPPB, IS)
  • Collects and reports patient information as an aid to planning of respiratory treatment programs
  • Obtains sputum samples (spontaneous cough only) and documents as appropriate
  • Conducts peak flow assessments
  • Demonstrates for patient education the use of home treatment systems (i.e., Peak Flow, Spacer)
  • Performs pre-cleaning, decontamination, and transports instruments that have been used on patients appropriately.
